The Mercators (2012) The Mercators (2012)

The Inimitable Dickens
A Dramatised reading

  • First staged by the Mercators at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe
  • Extensively revised as All about Dickens for the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe
  • Running time - eighty minutes
  • Script and performing rights available from the author

Cast
The current script is configured for 8 readers (4 male, 4 female), but numbers can be easily adapted to suit

Staging
Can be very adaptable. A row of chairs is all that is required. A lectern could be added with other furnishings to suit. Dramatic readings are particularly ideal for non-theatrical venues and as touring productions

Synopsis

The Inimitable Dickens is devised to be staged as a rehearsed dramatised reading. The present script is configured for 8 performers (4 males & 4 females), the numbers created for its performance at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. However, lines can be re-allocated to create flexible numbers.

Although scripts are used, performers should be confidently familiar with the text. There are sequences that will work better without scripts.

The script is drawn from many of the excellent biographies available, particularly those by Peter Ackroyd and Fred Kaplan.  Extracts include not only his popular novels such as Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby, David Copperfield, Bleak House and Our Mutual Friend, but some of his lesser known works such as Mugby Junction.

The Intimate Dickens is a performance piece. Inevitably, some "licence" has been taken for dramatic purposes, particularly in the extracts from the novels. Please note that in the extracts from the novels, the original punctuation and spelling has been preserved.

“Very good, informative and different. I liked this. It's Dickens' life story illustrated cleverly from his writings” - edfringe.com
